Newbuild Construction, Long-Term Technical Support & Special Survey 2 Program

Alternative Marine Technologies (AMTECH) served as Vessel Construction Manager for the design integration, construction supervision, and delivery of twelve 25,000 DWT eco-design chemical tankers built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea. The vessels—Otto H, Willard J, Marie C, Alfred N, Linus P, and Louis P—were delivered in 2016. AMTECH has continued as the owner’s representative for technical support and operational oversight since delivery.

Each ship measures approximately 169 meters in length overall with a beam of 25.6 meters and a deadweight of roughly 25,160 tonnes. The series was built as IMO II chemical/product tankers with eco-design features, including electronically controlled high-efficiency main engines and integrated ballast water treatment systems.

Construction Phase

AMTECH conducted a full design and drawing review prior to construction. AMTECH then attended throughout the building phase at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, performing inspections at key stages from steel cutting and keel laying through launching, outfitting, commissioning, and sea trials. AMTECH remained on site through final acceptance and delivery in 2016, supporting the transition into commercial service.

Ongoing Technical and Operational Oversight

Since delivery, AMTECH has overseen the daily operations of the vessels and provided the owners with technical and operational guidance. This includes advice on maintenance strategy, Class compliance, cargo system performance, and lifecycle planning, drawing on direct knowledge of the vessels’ design and construction.

Special Survey 2 Drydock Program

AMTECH is managing the Special Survey 2 drydockings for all six vessels at facilities in Yeosu, South Korea. Special Survey 2 requires extensive inspection, testing, and renewal of hull, machinery, and systems. AMTECH’s responsibilities cover project management, scope coordination, Class attendance, and quality control for the full drydock program.

A primary element of the work is the complete re-coating of all cargo tanks with Advanced Polymer Coatings MarineLINE. MarineLINE is a heat-cured polymer coating that forms a tightly knit, chemically inert barrier. It provides high resistance to aggressive chemical cargoes—including acids, alkalis, solvents, and methanol—while enabling efficient cleaning and turnaround. Re-coating during Special Survey 2 renews tank condition, extends service life, and preserves the vessels’ ability to carry a wide range of products. AMTECH is overseeing tank preparation, application, inspection, and documentation to meet specification and Class requirements.

In parallel, AMTECH is applying Hempel’s silicon coating to the vessels as part of the drydock program. The silicon coating is being applied to reduce the vessels’ EEDI and EEXI ratings, improving energy efficiency and supporting compliance with current and future efficiency regulations.

AMTECH’s Role in the Special Survey Program

AMTECH’s scope for the Special Survey 2 drydockings includes:

  • Project management and owner’s representative services for all six vessels

  • Coordination with the shipyard, Class society, coating suppliers, and contractors

  • Technical review of survey findings and repair specifications

  • Oversight of cargo tank blasting, preparation, and MarineLINE application

  • Oversight of Hempel’s silicon coating application for EEDI/EEXI reduction

  • Quality assurance and inspection during coating and machinery work

  • Schedule management and progress reporting

  • Support for Class surveys, testing, and final acceptance

Lifecycle Continuity

AMTECH’s involvement with these six tankers runs from design review and construction attendance at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard through daily operational oversight and the current Special Survey 2 drydockings in Yeosu. This continuity supports consistent technical decision-making across construction, daily operations, and major lifecycle events. The program reflects AMTECH’s experience in chemical tanker newbuild projects and in the sustained technical management of specialized tonnage.
