2,200m³ LNG Bunker Barge
Assistance on Vessel Construction Management, Project Completion & Post-Delivery Oversight
Alternative Marine Technologies (AMTECH) was brought on to assist on vessel construction management for the LNG bunker barge Clean Jacksonville. AMTECH brought its Korean team in to support completion of the project, including specialized expertise in GTT Mark III LNG tank construction and installation. After delivery, AMTECH provided operational oversight of the vessel before that responsibility was transferred back to TOTE Services.
The Clean Jacksonville is North America’s first LNG bunker barge. Built at Conrad Orange Shipyard in Orange, Texas, and delivered in 2018, it features a single cargo tank of approximately 2,200 cubic meters with GTT Mark III Flex membrane containment technology and a GTT REACH4 bunker mast for ship-to-ship LNG transfer. The barge measures approximately 232 feet in length with a beam of 49 feet. It is also equipped with an LNG re-cooling unit designed to manage excess boil-off gas and optimize use of vapor generated in the tank, along with vapor return capability from the receiving vessel.
Project Background
Developed to bunker the world’s first LNG-powered container ships in the Port of Jacksonville, the Clean Jacksonville was a first-of-its-kind vessel in North America. It required specialized engineering, regulatory approvals, and construction expertise for a membrane-type LNG containment system on a non-self-propelled barge.
Assistance on Vessel Construction Management and Completion
AMTECH was engaged to assist on vessel construction management as the project advanced and deployed its Korean team to support completion. This included direct technical involvement with the GTT Mark III tank system. AMTECH’s assistance covered construction oversight, inspections, coordination with the shipyard and equipment suppliers, and support through commissioning. The barge completed gas trials at Port Fourchon, Louisiana, before delivery in 2018.
Post-Delivery Operational Oversight
Following delivery, AMTECH provided operational oversight of the vessel. This oversight responsibility was later transferred back to TOTE Services, which assumed operation of the barge for bunkering service in Jacksonville.
Significance
The Clean Jacksonville was the first installation of a GTT membrane system in a non-self-propelled LNG bunker barge in the United States and the first use of a REACH4 bunker mast of its type. The inclusion of the LNG re-cooling unit supports efficient boil-off management during operations. AMTECH’s assistance on vessel construction management—supported by its Korean team and Mark III tank expertise—helped complete and deliver the vessel. The barge has since performed hundreds of bunkering operations and remains active in U.S. LNG marine fueling.
The project reflects AMTECH’s ability to assist on specialized LNG construction management and to provide post-delivery operational oversight on complex, first-of-kind vessels.
